Solar Base

Fewer moving parts.
More installs.

Solar Base gives US solar companies access to software that empowers them to focus on their mission — forged by solar veterans who have seen this business inside out, and who now build the software it runs on.

§ 01Premise

Residential solar is a hardware and service business. But nothing coordinates without software — and software is where a project is made or broken.

Most of the complexity in your business comes from outside your building: state and federal code, permitting, lender rules, credit checks, financing types, equipment availability, change orders, utility interconnection. Every one of those has an opinion about your data, and every one of them changes without asking.

Solar companies spend real money on software. The end result is often not great — instead of empowering the business, it slows it down. That's not a failure of effort. It's what happens when a hardware-and-service company is asked to operate like a software company.

§ 02The rewrite

Five sentences we hear, and how they end instead.

These are all "bad tech" problems. It is entirely normal to have them — you're a solar company, not a software company. It's rare for an operator not to have a version of each. Here they are, and here they are rewritten.

  1. "We've not had enough money to keep paying the Workato subscription, so our teams are back to doing those manually."

"We no longer need the subscription. Our workflows are written as code and run on a serverless platform that costs tens of dollars a month, not tens of thousands."

  2. "We feel like we're struggling to leverage AI in our business."

"Our operations are structured well enough that AI is genuinely useful on them. It helps our own team write and ship the workflows we need, and — where we choose to — it carries the routine back-and-forth with customers."

  3. "We didn't realise there's a limit on pipelines per table. We're really disappointed."

"Our total pipeline count is far below the limit, because the data abstraction is right. A ceiling you never approach isn't a ceiling."

  4. "We've paid our implementation partner a small fortune, and now we can't afford their support — they bill us by the hour."

"Our own team can read, change and ship the system. Outside help is a choice we make, not a dependency we're stuck with."

  5. "The platform is closed. There's very little online, every training costs a fortune, and the AI tools hallucinate because there's so little to learn from."

"We build on tooling that's well documented and widely written about — so our team, and the AI tools they use, both actually know how it works."

From the field

"Oh honestly I'd say 2 hours a shift."

An operator, asked how much time used to go into chasing down resolutions and following up to make sure the right people were actually working on them.

Chat screenshot. Them: 'It's definitely saving me a lot more time because a good chunk of my shifts used to be hunting down resolutions and following up with people to make sure they were working on the issues themselves and didn't lose sight of them. Now I'm able to hand it off to the proper parties and wait for their response.' Us: 'that's great, any ballpark on how much time hunting down was taking before vs now per setback?' Them: 'Oh honestly I'd say 2 hours a shift.' Us: 'WOW that's huge! super glad about that!'
§ 03Principles

Three rules we don't bend.

Occam's razor

Entities must not be multiplied beyond necessity.William of Ockham

The simplest solution is almost always the best one, and in solar it isn't close. Every extra table, tool, tab and integration is something that has to survive the next rule change. We remove before we add.

Less, but better

Weniger, aber besser.Dieter Rams

Every solar ERP we've seen tried to do too much with the resources it had. You can't hire the engineering bench a global software company can, and you shouldn't need to. Build the narrow thing that fits your operation, and build it properly.

Agility is not an advantage but a necessity

Solar's rules change every other month — a new incentive, a lender going under, a utility rewriting how net metering works. A system that can't be changed on short notice isn't stable. It's brittle.

§ 04Services

What we're hired to do.

We work as consultants inside your business. Everything we build, you own and your team can maintain — with AI as a tool they can actually use on it, because the system underneath is simple enough to reason about. That's the point of the engagement, not a bonus.

ERP architecture & data modelling

Getting the abstraction right, once. Most "we need another automation" problems are a data model problem wearing a costume — so we start there, before anyone writes a workflow.

Implementation & migration

Standing up a system that fits your process, or getting you off one that doesn't — without stopping sales and installs while it happens.

AI-assisted automation

Replacing per-task connector bills with workflows your team writes with AI and runs as code you own — including, if you want it, the routine customer back-and-forth — on infrastructure that costs what infrastructure should cost.

Integrations that hold

Lenders and financing, credit checks, proposal and design tools, equipment suppliers, permitting and utility portals. The seams where solar data usually goes wrong.

Reporting you can act on

One honest picture from lead to PTO — where every job is, what's stuck, and what it's costing you to be stuck there.

Advisory & fractional software leadership

For the person who became "the tech person" because nobody else would. A second opinion before you sign, and a hand on the wheel after you do.

§ 05Market

Built for the US solar market.

We work with residential solar companies across the United States. The hard part of US solar software isn't the software — it's that the rules are different in every state, every utility territory and every jurisdiction you pull a permit in, and they don't hold still. We build for that on purpose.

  • Federal & state incentive changes
  • AHJ permitting & inspection
  • Utility interconnection & NEM rules
  • Lender & dealer-fee structures
  • Credit checks & financing types
  • Change orders
  • Equipment availability
  • Multi-state operations
§ 06Contact

Tell us what's slowing you down.

Send us the thing that's annoying you most this week — the bill, the bottleneck, the report nobody trusts. If we're not the right people, we'll say so and point you somewhere better.
